CommRC 1732 Discussion Board

The link immediately below this text takes you to the University "blackboard" or "courseweb" site that houses the discussion board for this course. Clicking on the link should open a new browser window for you. Below that, you'll find information about the how the discussion board works.

TAKE ME TO THE DISCUSSION BOARD!

The Media & Music Sounding Room

A discussion board has been created for this course.  Because “Discussion Board” is a boring name, I’ve given it a snappier title.

Purpose:  Since we only meet once a week, this is a chance for you to be in contact with your classmates and think about course material outside the classroom.  You’ll post all of your journals and papers in this forum, and you are welcome to have other discussions as well.  I will look very favorably upon participation in the discussion forum above and beyond your journals when I calculate your participation grades at the end of the semester.

Ideas for non-journal posts:

* Relate an idea in one of the readings or from class discussion to your own experience.

* Comment on or criticize an author’s argument.

* Make use of an idea from the readings to consider something you’ve encountered in the media.

* Think about common themes or differences in opinion among authors we’ve read.

* Offer a different spin on something we’ve covered in class or the readings.

* Quick informational questions about something in the course

* Post a link to a cool music-related site on the internet

* Ask about or comment upon something you came across that might relate to this course

* Discuss different musical experiences, review shows or recordings

* Chat about any other topics related to media and music

Visit, Read and Post Often!

I will expect you to know what’s happening on the discussion board each class.

Getting to the discussion board:

This is really easy, I’m just spelling out the steps for you here.

  1. You can find a link on the website, or go directly to it at [http://courseweb.pitt.edu].
  2. Once you’re at the courseweb page, click on the link that says “login” and use the same login and password that you use for University email.
  3. You’ll then get to a page that says “My Courseweb.”  Down toward the bottom, you should see a link under “My Courses” that will take you directly to CommRC 1732, “Topics in Mass Communication.”  Click that link.
  4. Now you should see a link to the “Media and Music Sounding Room.”  Click on it and come on in.
  5. Click on the title of someone’s post in order to read it.  You’ll see boxes for replying to the post or starting a new thread.
  6. If any of this is really tough for you, stop by my office hours and I’ll show you how to do it.  Try it out before your first journal is due.  Not knowing how to post will not be an acceptable excuse for failing to complete a journal.

Discussion Board Rules and Tips: The same rules apply for the discussion board as class discussion in general (see the syllabus).  Here are a few special suggestions:

  1. Absolutely no flaming, ever.  Extend the same courtesy to your classmates that you’d expect for yourself.
  2. Don’t take stuff personally.  People will disagree with you.  People will have different tastes in music.  People may or may not respond to your posts.  Don’t sweat it.
  3. Post in a timely fashion.  Better to get your ideas out there while the topic is fresh.
